John “Jack” Ford coached at Winnacunnet High School in Hampton, NH starting in 1974. His coaching career was highlighted by winning the Class L State Championship in 1992. Jack retired from coaching in 2005. Before leaving, the Jack Ford Memorial Scholar Athlete Award was created as a balance to the Mr. Basketball award which is geared towards the BEST Players (50% basketball performance) in the state. Jack Ford had insisted that academics and community service be taken into equal consideration.
The Jack Ford Memorial Scholar Athlete Award was created for both Boys & Girls and is considered with the following criteria to be taken into consideration:
33% Basketball Performance– Statistics- points, rebounds, assists steals etc. Teams Performances, Individual Awards and Honors, Career Awards and Honors. NHIAA performance only no AAU, showcase etc.
33% Academic Performance– Grade Point Average, Class Rank, Honor Roll Status.
33% Citizenship/Community Service– Community Service and Citizenship goes.
This is awarded yearly at all division levels, coaches nominate players from their team and winners are voted on by the coaches at each level.
